A moving account of the lifelong friendship between a flaming heterosexual and rampant womaniser and a likeable, witty and charismatic man who just happened to prefer the company of men - a friendship that began at prep school and continued to the last days of JFK's life.Lem was so close to both JFK and his wife that he famously had his own bedroom at the White House and was probably President Kennedy's most trusted confidant.I really enjoyed this book - and truth be told I was surprised that a good Catholic boy like JFK was so open-minded and tolerant as to remain lifelong friends with Lem (after politely rebuffing his advances during adolescence) and to include him in his inner circle - presumably in spite of the potential risk of adverse publicity (at time when homosexuality was illegal), but Lem was discreet and dignified and seems to have values loyalty to his friend above all else.Aside from the valuable insights into the life of President Kennedy the man, his family, his challenges and of his administration, this book is a masterpiece, a powerful tribute to the enduring value of true friendship, and in many ways it reveals Jack Kennedy, although flawed and imperfect, to have been a man who inspired the devotion, dedication and loyalty of those around him as well as being a man well ahead of his times.I LOVE this book. A fascinating, well-researched and historically-based love story about two lifelong friends: one, an American president, and the other, his boyhood friend who shared the president's journey, from high school to the White House. Lem Billings was JFK's loyal and loving friend for 30 years. I now have a much greater understanding of and respect for Kennedy after seeing how he returned Lem's loyalty and love in full measure, even though knowing he was a closeted gay man. There was never any sexual activity between the two, but an astute politician like JFK obviously knew the potential danger to him if the press ever reported that the president's best friend was a homosexual. Much to his credit, Kennedy valued the loyalty and devotion of a true friend so highly that he cast a blind eye on Lem's orientation. Still, the story is a sad one, not just because of that Friday in Dallas, but b/c Lem's whole life revolved around JFK and the Kennedy family, even at the cost of building his own life and romantic relationships separate from them. By now an alcoholic, Lem died in his sleep of a heart attack in May 1981, on the eve of what would have been JFK's 64th birthday. I would suggest that Lem actually died of a broken heart.
